The goal of this paper is to determine the status quo of the communication instrument known as the weblog in order to derive a use for it in a communication policy.
A definition of the term communication policy is given at the start of the theory section and is followed by an illustration of the instruments in the communications mix which are used in corporate communication policies. A further chapter discusses the characteristics, manifestations and possible applications of weblogs. Finally, the weblog is assigned to one of these instruments and its special features when used as an instrument in corporate communication policies are highlighted. This facilitates a comparison between weblogs and other communication instruments.
In order to survey the use of weblogs in communication policies, companies in Germany, Austria and Switzerland which use weblogs as a communication instrument were chosen as objects of investigation. 465 companies were identified as a result of an online search. An online survey was used to collect the data. The findings show that the weblog is used most often in companies in the information & consulting industry with up to 50 employees and that mostly the management is responsible for preparing the entries. The most popular use of corporate blogs is to address topics which are part of the sphere of competence of the company. The weblog is predominantly used in addition to the company website. Most corporate blogs started up in 2006. This shows that the weblog is becoming increasingly significant in corporate communication policies.
